To All UNI Grads!
DougWhile I was traveling back from Iowa I had to make a quick stop at my alma mater-The University of Northern Iowa. For those of you who graduated from UNI, perhaps this post and its pictures will be a fun little reminder of the good ole’ college days. Feel free to pass it along to any other UNI grads you may know of.

The Promised Land in all its glory! This was the place where much “fruit” was found and much fun did abound. Feel free to share a memory (PG version recommended) from the days we spent in this infamous place. My brother and these two guys (JT and Vit. Z) were amongst the brethren that I was blessed to rub shoulders with in this sacred home.
The Good Ole’ Campanile. This is a special place for some who participated in the annual ritual (you know what it is if you went to UNI) but it’s special for Jaime and me for a different reason. This is where I first told Jaime my intentions to “court” her. I couldn’t get the words out at first, so I shared with her that this campinile made me think of the verse, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe” (Prov. 18:10). Real smooth and super-spiritual, huh?! Later, I took Jaime back to this spot as the starting place (I ended up proposing at Trinity Wesleyan Church) to ask her to marry me.
Ahh … Schindler Education Center. The site of BASIC in its beginning years. The place where many a skit and many a song were acted and sung by crazy young Christian college students. This was also the place where I took many classes to earn my degree in Elementary Education. By the way, after I took this picture I went into Schindler and it smelled exactly the same way it did nearly 10 years ago. Weird, huh?
Thank you God for the many memories!

We need to have a “nearly 10 year” reunion of those involved in the campus ministries at that time!

I was thinking the same thing Eric. A 10-year college reunion sounds much more fun than my 10-year high school reunion!

Hey, Heidi and I were just talking about the same thing the other day! I think that would be very cool!

That settles it!
Doug — you’re the official organizer and your blog is the official information center for “Nearly 10 Years: The unOfficial UNI Campus Ministry Reunion.”

I can make it back if it is next summer! Let’s do it. How about in late July or August? Doug, tell us your favorite memory of the PL when you get a chance. There are so many. I remember after a long day of studying coming back to my room and looking up into my bunk to find a large old woman staring down at me! JT put the fear of God into me! Wow, was that freaky!

“Nearly 10 Years: The Unofficial UNI Campus Ministry Reunion” sounds like a lot of fun. I’ll run things by Jaime and see if we can’t line up something next year. Just so you know, if it does happen, I’ll be contacting you to be a part of the planning committee!

okay, one promised land memory … it just so happened that one day when I came home from class I opened the apartment door to find brown water dripping from the ceiling right onto our kitchen floor and table. i thought, wow, there must be some kind of leak. little did I know that one of the guys living above us (in the upper promised land) had caused their toilet to overflow. So I guess you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why the dripping water was brown. Thankfully there were a few folks that came to clean up the mess. But ya know, it didn’t stop all of us guys from eating off that kitchen table the rest of the year! Yes … we were college men who were without wives to help us see reality!

the phantom undies… shall i say more?

You might want to add that we didn’t change the plastic table cloth either! Oh well, a little dirty brown water never hurt anyone!
By the way, I resent the fact that many think the PL was dirty… It was just a little “less refined”. : ) Then again, there were places that were never cleaned. We had made it up in our minds to leave that privilege to the next renters!

Hey Doug and Jaime! So fun to look through your site! I saw the link to it on Mark and Maki’s blog… Wow, hard to believe that it’s almost been 10 years since we left college! Where does the time go? Great to see that you guys are doing so well! Your girls are just beautiful! Let us know if the 10 year reunion comes together! Blessings, jen “mcculley” johnson
