Join the Online Book Discussion

521382_1_ftc_dp1.jpgBeginning March 3rd, you are invited to join an online book discussion over the book, Teaching to Change Lives by Howard Hendricks.  For the next seven weeks you can participate by reading a chapter each week and visiting this blog to read the summary and questions for reflection.  You can also feel free to post your comments or questions over the book as we make our way through it together.  If you don’t have the book, order it or check it out at your library and join our discussion any time.  I look forward to seeing how God uses us to change lives through our teaching.

The introduction is a must read on the power of loving others. I’m about half thru chapter 1 and this is very good. My favorite phrase so far is “You learn from the past, you don’t live in it”. I will keep checking in as i read. Robin

  • Doug Says:

I agree, Robin. The introduction starts us off on the right foot by reminding us of why we should teach. It’s a passion and love for the students in our class and a passion for the truth (God’s Word) we communicate to them. Look for more on chapter one soon. But thanks for reminding us about the intro as a “must read” like you said.

i love it!!! i finished the intro. and first chapter last night. it is such an easy and quick read (love that!!!) dr. hendricks is the real deal!!! he is so down to earth and so humble. i am so excited about finishing the book. he is smart and yet so easy to understand, some authors are not so easy to get:-) he is full of passion for the lord and students. this is a great idea, thanks!!!!

Thanks for your comment, Missy. It’s always encouraging to hear your enthusiasm. You’re right … Dr. Hendricks is the real deal. You can tell he’s a great teacher and a great model for us who teach. Keep your comments coming (on the current chapter) as they benefit others too.

Missy is right, such an easy read (I am re-discovering the joy of reading now that my boys are getting bigger!) There were so many things I could go on about but the main thing it left me with is encouragement!

  • Robin Lawson Says:

Finished Chapter 1. I really enjoy that Dr. Hendricks isn’t afraid to get in the face of his students and this challenges me to “love” others in a way that Jesus would want. He certainly wasn’t afraid to point out wrongs in his ministry. I found the part about physical discipline very interesting. How true in that we will talk about abortion, lying, drinking, etc. but not about gluttony in the church. This also challenges me to take care of the body as a temple to the LORD.

    Doug,
I want to get this book to Cliff Hardaway and have him read it. It is good for anyone but especially those interested in teaching. When you see me tonight, can you get me another so i can get to Cliff.

    Great book.

Sure thing, Robin. I’ll have a copy on my desk if I don’t see you. I’m glad you’re enjoying the book and wanting to spread the word to others. I like your thoughts and comments too … next time put them in the most recent discussion post so others will make sure to see it.

    Thanks!

I don’t think my post from last chapter went through, but to reiterate, Jeff and I are both reading this. It is an easy read and contains so much information I find it hard to retain it all! I am thoroughly enjoying it, gaining much knowledge, feeling conviction and being challenged to center my life more on Christ.
