What do you miss most about Iowa?
Doug
Since I’m from Iowa, I thought it was interesting to read Ashton Kutcher’s response to this question in a recent interview with Time magazine.
What do you miss most about growing up and living in the Midwest?
Kutcher said,
… I miss the certain smell in Iowa when it’s about to rain. I miss how quiet it is. I miss having neighbors that I know and that I like. The thing I probably miss most of all is that people in Iowa have a different, genuine quality and a self-sufficient humility, a desire to do things for themselves and not complain.
I’m curious. If you grew up in Iowa and moved away, what do you miss most about it?

I miss the three feet of snow… oh wait…
Seriously thought I just miss how nice it is. Nice. Just nice. The more I have lived away from there the more I appreciate it.

I miss pitch black summer nights and looking up at the stars… and running barefoot in the grass… I miss being able to say, “hi” to everyone I walk past on the street. I miss so many things, that could probably be said about other places in the states as well, but it wouldn’t be Iowa… I guess it’s because I miss my family most of all. Can’t wait to see you next summer!

Funny…I do miss the quiet pace of life, but maybe what I’m missing is how simple life used to be when I was younger! And of course the good times with family like you mentioned Mark. Zach used the word, “nice” which seems really vague at first, but the more I think about it, captures what Iowa is all about.

I know what I will miss when we are living in the Middle East: four seasons and green (trees, grass, fields, etc.) Next time you’re in Iowa notice how many shades of green you see as you drive down the highway (assuming you’re not there in the winter!).
